Progressing Core Workouts Part 3: Correct Effort

If you want to get stronger, you need to try hard. This is as true with your training as it is with your climbing. It doesn’t matter how good an exercise or a program is, if you aren’t putting in the correct effort then you won’t get the results you’re looking for.

Lets use Planks as an example for this. Yes, Planks. Those things that most climbers can do for 10 minutes at a time without gaining anything except boredom and sore elbows. Planks can be a great addition to a core routine, and a real time saver...when done correctly. If you think holding a plank means trying to stay as relaxed as possible while keeping your body in a straight line, then you probably haven’t seen much benefits from planks. However, if you’ve ever done Hardstyle Planks then you understand just how difficult a 15 second plank can be.

In the following video we use the Hardstyle Climber Plank to demonstrate the importance of using the correct effort during your exercises.
